Seller's Description: LSB#: 161028DL11 Make: Sportco Sporting Arms, Australia Model: Clubmaster Serial Number: U081 Year of Manufacture: The barrel was made in 1962, and we would assume was assembled to the receiver shortly thereafter. The receiver was made by BSA, probably during WWII. Caliber: .22 Long Rifle Action Type: Martini-Henry Falling Block Action Single Shot Rifle Markings: The top of the barrel is marked with “SPORTCO”, “SPORTING ARMS LTD. / SOUTH AUSTRALIA” and “CLUBMASTER : 22 L.R.”. The left side of the barrel is marked “U081”, with a “Crown / BNP” definitive proof, “.22 LR .610” / 8 TONS PER SQ “”, and with a “Crossed Scepters / N 2 B” date stamp, indicating the barrel was made in 1962. The underside of the barrel at the front of the forend is marked with the import mark “MT GUNS SANTA BARB. CA.”. The top front of the receiver is marked with a Kangaroo and its top left shoulder is marked with a “Crown / BNP” definitive proof. Barrel Length: The heavy target barrel is 27 ¾” in length and is 0.850” in diameter at the muzzle. Sights / Optics: There is a globe front sight dovetailed into the top of the barrel. The globe allows interchangeable inserts and the insert installed is a circle (donut) at the top of a pin. The left rear of the receiver has two holes drilled and tapped for an aperture sight, and there are also two drilled and tapped holes in the right side of the receiver, one at the rear and one at the front. Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two piece smooth walnut with a lacquered finish. The buttstock has a pistol grip with a nearly vertical face that is inlet so that the lever, when closed, can sit flush with the front face of the grip. The buttstock has a Monte Carlo comb with a serrated black plastic buttplate that is adjustable for height. The forend is a wide beavertail that has a 8 5/8” slot inlet into its underside and a threaded hole in the lower left shoulder of the forend near the rear. The slot currently has one 4 5/8” long plate screwed into that has 7 threaded holes for mounting a palm rest or sling swivels. There 5 more ¼” holes drilled into the slot plus a small mounting hole at the front of the slot for use with a longer accessory plate. There are several dings near the toe of the stock, a few drag lines on the left side of the wrist and buttstock, several small scratches along the left side of the comb, several drag lines and a small ding in the right side of the wrist, a spot of finish loss on the right side of the buttstock and a few dings and thinning of the finish at the back of the comb. The underside of the forend shows multiple dings and scrape marks through the finish. There are a few bruises and several drag lines on each side of the forend, and a nearly 3” long crack at the front of the forend on the left side. The LOP is 12 9/16” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate shows light wear at the heel and toe, and has a hole in the toe where the buttplate was once mounted to something. The buttplate is in about Very Good condition. The stocks rate in about Good overall condition. Type of Finish: The receiver and lever are blued. The top of the barrel (not the underside) has a black coating over its original blued finish to give it a dull non-reflective finish. Finish Originality: The receiver was refinished by Sportco when they converted the rifle from a Martini Cadet to a Clubmaster. The blued finish on the barrel is original to the barrel but the dull finish on the top of the barrel was probably added at a later date. Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 80% of its current metal finish. The barrel shows surface loss on its front edge and a few light scratches and marks through its finish on its underside. The top of the barrel shows multiple scrape marks through its black coating, with a few penetrating the blued finish underneath. The receiver shows tool marks around the screw at the lower front corner on both sides, a spot of thinning on the right side of the receiver, a few tiny marks in the left side, and thinning in the left side where something was mounted to the top rear. There are also a few tiny marks in the trigger guard. The screw heads are distressed. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition. Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards. Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None Our Assessment: During WWII, BSA made the Martini Cadet training rifle in .310 caliber. They were sent to New South Wales, Australia from the U.K. under contract, and had a kangaroo/wallaby insignia stamped on the top front of the receiver, amongst other markings. Following the war, the Martini Cadets were sold-off to the public. Sportco bought many of them and started making sporting rifles by replacing the barrel and forend. The Clubmaster target rifle was made in limited quantities for target shooting in Australia – the Clubmaster barrel was exceptional and the price of the rifle, equipped with BSA target sights was much less than what a new BSA target rifle would cost. In many cases, the buttstock was retained and a new forend was added, and a new lever was forged to fit flush with the front face of the pistol grip when the lever was closed. Most of the BSA markings were ground off while retaining the kangaroo on the top of the receiver, and the receivers were refinished. For more information, please see: http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=415771. This rifle is in about Very Good condition with about 80% of its current finish remaining. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. This is a nice vintage single shot rimfire target rifle, with a heavy target barrel and heavy target stocks. It needs a rear sight, but otherwise would make a great small bore target rifle. CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This C&R eligible rifle can be transferred/sold in California. Product Description
Serial Number: U481
Used for Target shooting and Competitions, Ideal for first time rifle owner.
Sportco was an Australian manufacturer of rifles and shotguns in Adelaide, South Australia, from 1947 until the early 1980s. Founded by Jack Warne, also known by its full name Sporting Arms Limited, began by manufacturing single shot 22LR rifles. Sportco purchased ex military Martini Cadet rifles from the Australian Government and converted them to both rimfire and centrefire calibres as well as rebarrelling Lee–Enfield rifles to .303/22 and .303/25.
Soon they began producing their own designs of bolt action and ‘Sportomatic’ semi-automatic rifles as well as single shot shotguns followed by semi-automatic shotguns and pump action rifles. They also started to export to Great Britain, Rhodesia, Borneo, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand and the United States of America.
Sportco supplied the British military with a blow-back action self-loading training rifle with a ten-round capacity. Sold in Australia as the Model 71S the British dubbed it Rifle,L29A2. An example is to be found in the Enfield Pattern Room collection. Sportco also supplied Winchester with actions for their Model 320 10 shot bolt action repeater and Model 310 single shot.
Sportco also sold ammunition under its own brand name that was manufactured by Riverbrand and Winchester Australia.
Their longest lasting model was the Model 44 target rifle which would later would be known as the Omark Model 44 and would be produced by MAB Engineering when Sportco would close its doors.
Sportco was sold to Omark Industries and shut its doors in the early 1980s.
